PORTLAND, Oregon — A retired Milwaukie man is the latest winner of Oregon's Game Megabucks, with a winning ticket worth $8.4 million, according to the Oregon Lottery.
David Schultze, 68, said he had no clue he won until checking his ticket last Friday. The winning numbers were drawn back on Jan. 24. The Oregon Lottery said that Schultze spent the whole weekend in utter shock at the discovery, until he claimed his prize at the lottery's Wilsonville office.
Schultze doesn't play much, but when he noticed the jackpot going up, he bought himself a ticket. He bought his ticket at a Safeway in Gladstone; the store earned a $84,000 bonus for selling his winning ticket, according to the agency.
As for Schultze's plans for the prize money, he plans to invest most of it with no future plans of any big splurges.
It's highly recommended for anyone purchasing a ticket to sign the back of the ticket to prevent any issues from claiming the prize. It's also recommended for players to consult with a trusted financial planner to develop a plan for their winnings. Winners typically have a year to claim their prize, according to the Oregon Lottery.
